Mexico I

Description
In addition to being one of the main countries of origin of migration flows to the US, Mexico is also a key transit country for migrants traveling northbound from the Northern Triangle of Central America (NTCA) comprising El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Increasingly these mixed migratory flows  include significant numbers of children in migration

In this context the National Institute of Migration requested MIEUX’s support to improve its capacities and skills on identification, monitoring and adequate protection of children in migration.

The capacity building activities provided an opportunity to also involve other institutions such as  the National Commission for Refugee Assistance and National System for Integral Family Development. Two high-level national dialogues and a regional workshop involving representatives from the NTCA and the US helped to discuss shared strengths, challenges and lessons learnt across European Member States and Mexico. The MIEUX experts also supported the development of a Handbook on good practices, on the basis of which the capacity building department of the National Institute of Migration developed an online course for its child protection officers , which was launched in 2019.
