The MIEUX Initiative will conclude its 15-year journey at the end of March 2024. The team is organising an event in Brussels on Tuesday 12 March to celebrate the achievements together with partner authorities, experts and Brussels-based representatives from civil society, the diplomatic corps, international organisations and think tanks.
Since its inception in 2009, MIEUX has served as an invaluable and inclusive platform for requesting capacity development activities and EU expertise, fostering the exchange of knowledge and practices among peers both within and outside Europe.
MIEUX has run in parallel to the development of key milestones in the EU external dimension of migration and asylum, such as the Global Approach to Migration and Asylum (GAMM), the 2015 European Agenda on Migration, and the 2020 new Pact on Migration and Asylum.
The facility evolved from a small pilot project that provided technical assistance in areas of irregular migration and trafficking in human beings to a fully-fledged capacity development programme encompassing all areas of migration management and governance, inspiring others, such as the UN Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund or the European Union Global Diaspora Facility.
Beyond key figures: impact for institutions
Operating across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the EU Neighbourhood, MIEUX has implemented 138 Actions in more than 100 countries. Since 2009, MIEUX has received 188 requests for assistance from a wide range of institutions in partner countries, including ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs, directorates of Diaspora, regional organisations, parliamentary and judicial bodies and civil society organisations.
To match the expertise needed from the European side, up to 48 EU MS Focal Points have been involved at some point during the 15-year tenure, deploying 465 experts from Europe and beyond. This platform for peer-to-peer knowledge exchange has reached over 15,000 participants.
Beyond the figures, MIEUX has played a pivotal role in building bridges between the EU and partner countries by deepening the understanding of migration. It has brought together diverse stakeholders to formulate national and regional migration goals, supported the establishment of institutional cooperation frameworks, and empowered partners with tailor-made practices, solutions and policies.
Additionally, MIEUX has been instrumental in initiating and developing new opportunities for cooperation for partner countries, the EU and its Member States. Working side by side with other organisations, EU Delegations and EU programmes running in partner countries, the facility has contributed to reinforcing links between authorities, civil society and other groups, depending on the context of each particular partner.
Time to convene and celebrate
To celebrate its achievements with partners and reflect on the knowledge and practices that can be applied to future migration facilities, the MIEUX team is organising the MIEUX impact event: 15 years of partnerships and peer exchange on migration governance in Brussels on Tuesday 12 March 2024.
This one-day closing event aims to recognise the collective impact, celebrate achievements, share insights and lessons learned, and provide a dynamic platform for networking and knowledge-sharing about targeted capacity development in migration governance and management.
Interpretation will be available in English, French, and Spanish. The event will be held exclusively on site, with no live streaming available.
